FIONA

In the winter of 2020, we were contacted by a fellow rescue about a dire situation—a farm full of animals left in horrific neglect. The conditions were appalling: dead animals, filth everywhere, and pigs of all sizes left to fend for themselves with nothing but dog biscuits to eat. The owner had given the rescue permission to rehome any animals they could, as he no longer wanted them.

Without hesitation, we agreed to take in some pigs. That same week, Portland was bracing for a historic ice storm, and our volunteer rushed to get the pigs to safety before freezing temperatures set in. With no prior experience in caring for pigs, we focused on getting them to warmth and safety as quickly as possible.

When our volunteer arrived, he brought back three small pigs—three of the cutest, sweetest pigs we had ever seen. They were in poor health but immediately sought comfort in their cozy new room. Our vet found that they had mange, were severely underweight, and hadn’t been dewormed. Tragically, one of the pigs, Maisie, was also battling pneumonia. Maisie spent several days in the hospital, but against all odds, she made a miraculous recovery.

As they healed, we discovered that Petunia had lost one of her eyes in a food-related fight. We also learned she had some hearing loss. Maisie, too, had hearing impairment, along with a head tilt and being cross-eyed as she got older.

Despite their challenges, these three girls quickly became inseparable. We’re not sure if they’re biologically related, but they are family—forever. Petunia, the smallest of the three, has the biggest personality. Maisie, despite her impairments, brings endless joy and laughter to our staff with her unique way of communicating. Fiona, with her adorable little legs, has the sweetest run and loves to flop over for belly rubs whenever a volunteer is nearby.

Petunia, Maisie, and Fiona have taught us so much about the resilience and joy of pigs. They’ve become an integral part of our sanctuary, and their love, loyalty, and antics continue to touch the hearts of everyone who meets them.

Fiona is a gentle soul with a heart full of love. She adores attention and isn’t shy about asking for it—often flopping over at the feet of our volunteers, eagerly waiting for belly rubs. In the summertime, she can be found lounging in the pool or, if it's occupied, making herself comfortable in the water trough instead. Whether she’s soaking up the sun or enjoying a lazy afternoon nap, Fiona embraces every moment with joy. Her sweet nature and playful spirit make her a favorite among everyone who meets her.
